Apero's @ L.A. Yogurteria, Menton

Friday, October 3rd 2025

The big question was, would it rain? The forecast wasn’t good. True to form, our members rallied and 28 enjoyed meeting up after the August break, with a drink and tasty canapés. Although a bit windy at one stage, a good time catching up was had.

BA Trip to San Raphael and St Tropez

Monday 15 September → Wednesday 17th September 2025

From the historique “LE CAFÉ,” to the iconic “SENEQUIER,” we explored both institutions, which made Tropez the famous destination it has become.

LE CAFÉ is one of the oldest establishments in St. Tropez and was converted from farm to drinking hostelry, during the French revolution.

It’s the soul of St. Tropez and the “Dolche Vita” of movie stars. This is where Mick Jagger and Bianca, celebrated their wedding.

LE CAFE has retained its original 19th century mirrors, intricate woodwork and pewter bar countertop. Lovely décor and a fitting place

for an excellent British Association de Menton luncheon. We did not fail to sample the original TARTE TROPEZIENNE dessert, nor the fine bottles of wine (sipped carefully, at 65€ per bottle!)

I had posted an invitation to Brigitte Bardot, to be our guest, which would have been the icing on the cake, but, understandably, the invitation was not taken up.

We arrived in St Tropez by ferry from St Raphael. Our first port of call was to Brasserie SENEQUIER in the port, facing the mega yachts. The coffee’s good and it’s a perfect place to people watch. The SENEQUIER first opened as a patisserie in 1887 and became a brasserie in 1930. Initially, it was a hangout for writers and artists, Picasso, being a regular. With its refit of  red director chairs and triangular tables in 1950, hot on the trail, trooped film stars and the rich, such as Ivanka Trump. Joan Collins is a regular, when in St. Tropez.

Dinner at LA ROMA, St Raphael, on our first night, Aperos at LA PASHA and last night of fun with pizzas, copious wine and song!

A great time was had by all,

BN

INAUGURATION OF LATEST ART,  PARC DU CAP MARTIN

September 9th 2025

“Les Journees de l’art Bre” hosted by the mayor of RCM, Patrick Casari and wife Martine, under the patronage of HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco. This year’s exhibit, unveiled by HSH Prince Albert II, bust of 1928 French Olympic Yachts woman, Virginie Heriot.

The inauguration was by invitation only, but the exhibits are now open to the public.

MENTON LIBERATION DAY 06. SEPTEMBER 2025

A colourful occasion, with additional sparkle this year, from the immaculate white uniforms of the French navy crew PLUTON. The vessel was moored in the port of Menton. The crew were invited to the mairie, by mayor, Yves Juhel, after the event. We presented a lovely floral tribute, as we do annually and were welcomed by the mayor.

Impressed with the French navy’s motto, “Honneur, patrie, valeur, discipline,” some of us decided a libation might be in order, so we sat down for a bit of Navy Lark, until quite late that evening.

Celebration of King Charles III official birthday

Saturday, June 14, 2025

I believe I can safely say, this was a really enjoyable event with much positive feed-back, Thank you. I am happy you enjoyed the occasion, which makes the hard work involved worthwhile.

When planning such an event with so many attending, many things have to be taken into consideration. Negotiations with VIP’s, choosing a venue, the live music, discussion with caterers on food to be served, purchase of wine and prosecco at the best price and subsequent transport to venue, purchasing and wrapping raffle prizes, taking reservations, seating of guests, checking late payments, the sequence the event will take and notifying members and guests of same. The magic word is organisation!

My thanks to Annie and Judy for the pretty floral decorations, to the volunteers who decorated the Salle de Grand Bretagne the afternoon before, To Helene for collecting last minute payments and raffle total, to Jessica, Charlie and Helene for selling raffle tickets and to our very own “Ant & Dec” in charge of the raffle, (Also known as Pete & Dave.)

THE GREAT UNVEILING OF THE ROBERT LOUIS STEVENSON PLAQUE IN MENTON

Wednesday, 11. June 2025

This has taken quite a few years to achieve amidst regular setbacks! Even the unveiling ceremony was held up for more than an hour.

We valiantly waited, or should I say wilted, in the heat, in very British stiff upper lip mode.

Unfortunately, the mayor couldn’t make it, and his two representatives must have been pulled from the tennis court at the last minute.

All said and done, the plaque is now in prime position.

Well done RLS president Martin White and Jon Cossar, president of the RLS club. The plaque was donated to the city of Menton by the Robert Louis Stevenson Club Edinburgh.

VE-Day in Menton

An eventful day in Menton yesterday. Lots of pomp and splendour. A lovely meal with wine subsidised by the mairie de Menton. One important thing had been forgotten!

Considering Britain had won the war, there was no British anthem played and no Union Jack to be seen. At least our wreath of red flowers held two small Union Jack, lest we forget!

I had to include this picture of the handsome French chaussers, the elite alpine infantry, trained for urban warefare in mountainous terrain.
